In many ways, Gianfranco Notargiacomo is a forerunner of non-codified languages, capable of moving from form to image, from structure to painting with the same skill and intelligence. Precisely for this reason it represented the solution to contrasting, intertwined nodes, opposing with one another, divergent and converging at the same time.
The Spoleto Modern Art Gallery has a rich deposit of works, mostly donations or acquisitions made over the years, some of which are destined to rotate and leave the stores from time to time.
Gianfranco Notargiacomo accepted the invitation to seek a dialogue with the artists and the works of the collection preserved in the deposits of Santo Chiodo, finding the keystone of the curatorial proposal in about twenty paintings by authors with whom he had an actual relationship, such as Burri, Sadun, Bendini, Pace, Vacchi, Asdrubali, Rossano, Gandini, Cascella, Ceroli, Boille, Cotani, Mattiacci, Luzzi, Pozzati.
The Convergenze exhibition opens at Palazzo Collicola Saturday 14 December at 11.30 and will be visitable till Synday 8 March 2020. The exhibition project takes the title from the famous installation Le nostre divergenze, the artist’s first personal exhibition held in Rome in 1971 at Plinio De Martiis’ La Tartaruga Gallery, then repeated several times over the decades in various museums, including the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome: over two hundred colored plastic dolls that invade the gallery in all its spaces. The first time it was exhibited in public the installation was defined in the Herald Tribune by Edith Schloss as “The most surprising show”.
In the spaces of the ground floor of Palazzo Collicola, right where the permanent collection of the Gallery of Modern Art was once located, about 140 little men will talk with the works selected from the collection’s deposit, in a continuous flow between memory and present, as if they were witnesses enchanted by an apparition, by an unveiling. On the occasion of the Notargiacomo exhibition, he will donate one of his sculptures, a typical Takete, to the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Spoleto, which will also be part of the exhibition along with other sculptures in the series, symbolically bringing together his works with those of the museum. During the exhibition, a public meeting will be held in which the artist will illustrate his links with the individual artists with whom he has chosen to dialogue. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the RUFA of Rome.
The exhibition will be open from Friday to Sunday, on Thursday 26 December and on Monday 6 January 2020 from 10.30 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 17.30.
Gianfranco Notargiacomo (Rome, 1945) In the 1970s he holds exhibitions at the Galleria La Tartaruga di Roma, Galleria La Salita, Palazzo delle Esposizioni. In 1980 he participates to the exhibition conceived by Flavio Caroli Magico Primario, at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara. The deep relation with Emilio Vedova dates to this period, and led to Vedova proposing him for the Premio della Presidenza della Repubblica at the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca. In 1982, 1986 and 2011 he is invited to the Venice Biennale di Venezia; in the 1980s he holds personal exhibitions at Castel Sant’Elmo, Naples, Casa del Mantegna in Mantua, Museo Laboratorio of the Università La Sapienza in Rome, Palazzo Reale in Milan. Nel 2009 tiene la mostra Le nostre divergenze 1971-2009 curata da Mariastella Margozzi alla Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna di Roma. In 2011 he is in Hangzhou, China, by the Zhejiang Daily Ideal Culture Development Company, then in Shanghai, at the Heng Yuanxiang Museum, where he creates two large Takète. In 2013 at the Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno he holds his exhibition A grandi linee. Among the many collective exhibitions, he is featured in the VIIIth and in the XIth Biennale de Paris and in the Sydney Biennale, he exhibited at the Hayward Gallery in London, at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, at the São Paulo Museum in Brasil, at the Taiwan Museum of Art and he is featured in the collection Artisti Italiani del XX secolo at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in L’Aquila, Florence and Rome, where in 2015 he is nominated Maestro Accademico Emerito. In 2013, by iniziative of the President of the Republic, he is awarded the honour of Commendatore Ordine al Merito of the Republic of Italy.

Raspi: Collages and paintings 1959 – 1963
The exhibition focuses on a Spoletan artist who as a member of the Spoleto Six and whose works are included in the Modern Art Gallery’s collection.
An experimentation that originated between 1958 and 1964, the Collages represent the climax of an importsant aesthetic research by Piero Raspi. Since the earliest 1958 works, still as a member of the Six, their abstract, refined architectures of simple, overlapping sheets seem to be crossed by vital leaps that become more and more marked over time. In the early 1960s, the structure of the works becomes more dynamic with the emergence, among the layers of paper, of components such as photographs, letters and three-dimensional objects. This reference to everyday reality gives the Collages an energy of non-sense, which puts the works closer to the contemporary new-dada decontextualization of American Robert Rauschenberg.
The production alternates with large informal paintings, albeit with obvious differences: from dimensions to materials, from chromatic to spatial impact. But what most differentiates the paintings from the Collages is the presence in the latter of an ironic vein, light and subtle like a veil. A common characteristic of all is the fact that for years they have been hidden in the archives of the author and for this reason they are absolutely new to some.
The exhibition inaugurates in Palazzo Collicola on Saturday 14 December at 11.30 and will be visitable till Sunday 8 March 2020, from Friday to Sunday, on Thursday 26 December 2019 and on Monday 6 January 2020 from 10.30 to 13.00 and from 15.00 to 17.30.
Piero Raspi – Born on 12 February, 1926 in Spoleto. He starts his fortunate artistic career within post-Cubism and founds the Group of Spoleto in the early 1950s. In the second half of the 1950s the main reference becomes the informal sphere, from which he learns new expressive possibilities of the matter outside of any surviving figurative need. In 1957 he joins the artists gravitating around the gallery “L’Attico” in Rome, where he exhibits repeatedly. In 1958 he participates in the Venice Biennale, gathering international fame. In this period he is identified as one of the protagonist of materic informalism, akin to Burri and Tàpies. In the early 1960s he holds many personal and collective exhibitions in Italy, including the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. Abroad he exhibits in London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Stuttgart, Paris, Brussels, Cologne Montreal, Madrid, Barcelona, Edinburgh, Chicago, Lucerne, Tel Aviv, Salzburg, Zurich and Tokyo. In 1967 he settles in Pennsylvania and starts confronting himself with Pop Art. In this period he paints a series of works that would eventually exhibit in Philadelphia and New York. In 1978, a new pictorial phase starts, marked by an unprecedented chromatism. With the beginning of the new millennium, in addition to the creation of monochromes, he embraces other forms of creative expression and makes use of new materials such as steel. In 2001 in Spoleto, at the Albornoz Palace, he realizes a wall sculpture in steel plates, where he transfers the abstract and refined architecture of the Collages made since the late 1950s. Starting from the second decade of the 2000s, he focuses on the critical revision and cataloging of his works, as well as on the restoration of some papers and Collages of the 1950s and 1960s.

L’onore perduto di Katharina Blum
Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”
Heinrich Böll (1959): “…those who publicly use words put whole worlds in motion, and in the small space between two lines so much dynamite can be amassed, to blow up these worlds…”
“Staging a novel implies being able to count on performers who fully embody the different characters conceived by the author” comments director Franco Però. “It was fortunate for us to have this group of actors – members of the Compagnia del Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia – that I immediately envisioned in the various characters of the book. Peppino Mazzotta, a fair and complete artist, and Elena Radonicich, whom I found perfect to give life to Katharina Blum, have joined them – finally on the stage, after their happy cinema experiences and in the most followed television dramas”.

But there are also confirmations along with the many new features, ie the renewed collaboration with Fontemaggiore, one of the most recognized and appreciated family theatre companies to which we owe the first two shows, and with the “Library goes to Theatre” project, which involves the loan of books as a further possibility of deepening all those emotions and suggestions experienced on the scene, in a fertile encounter between languages and arts.
The season opens Sunday 17 November with Mago per Svago by l’Abile Teatro, that was awarded at the Festival Clown&Clown in Monte San Giusto in 2018 and at the Milano Clown Festival 2018.

On 1 December it is the turn of Scarpette Strette by Luna e GNAC Teatro, awarded at the Festival di Ribalta 2010, finalist at the Festival Fit in Lugano (CH), 2009 and finalist at the Festival La Rosa d’Oro in Padua, 2009.
