Theatre Season Programme (PDF)

From 23 December to 6 January Spoleto will host an Ice Crib of 35 square meters, the largest in Italy, made by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors.
The Christmas crib will be located in Piazza Pianciani.
The work was created by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors, celebrating a centuries-old art born in the early twentieth century.
The Nativity, which will pay homage to the figure of St. Francis, will be placed inside a refrigerated truck and kept at a constant temperature of -2 °, a space where the public can admire over 18 tons of pure crystalline ice transformed into statues of real size.
The Nativity scene can be visited from 23 December to 6 January, from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., while on Sundays from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. The 25th of December and the 1st of January it will be open only in the afternoon. The cost of the ticket is € 2.00 for adults and 1 euro for children.
During the Christmas period, on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 December, some sculptors of the Association will perform in the historic center of Spoleto to demonstrate how a work of ice is born.
The event is organized by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors in collaboration with the City of Spoleto – Department of Culture and Development.
The Italian Association of Ice Sculptors, chaired by Amelio Mazzella, boasts numerous and prestigious participations and organizations of World competitions. The sculptors of the Association competed in ice sculpture competitions, which are part of the cultural program of the Winter Olympics, in 2002 in Salt Lake City (USA), in 2010 in Vancouver (Canada). On the occasion of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, they also organized an important event in Pragelato, involving 40 artists from 24 countries.

AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS
screening of the one-act opera by G. C. Menotti directed by Thomas Schippers
Special event organized by the Festival Foundation
The appointment is free of charge but reservation is required (345 3982114).
“During the 1950s, the opera represented a much-loved Christmas television tradition. Broadcast live every year since its first performance in 1951, Amahl was the first work commissioned for television and the first one to exploit the full potential of the new medium. With a libretto (in English) of remarkable lyrical beauty, written by the composer himself, and a cast of magnificent actors and singers, Amahl perfectly achieved the goal of the founders of the NBC Opera Theatre, which was to ‘bring authenticity and realism to opera’. Tailor-made by Menotti for an audience of children, this work has been for many an enlightening introduction to the world of opera as a musical theatre. It remains over time an enchanting experience, very evocative, and finally, deeply moving”.
A post-film debate with mayor Umberto De Augustinis and the Festival artistic director Giorgio Ferrara is foreseen.

As in past years, Spoleto’s Department of Culture organizes The fun before the theatre – as the children called it last year – the project of theatrical mediation held by the Cultural Association Il Teodelapio in the person of Lorella Natalizi, teacher of theatre for children.
The meetings are linked to La Domenica dei Sogni family theatre festival and will be held on the Saturdays preceding the Sunday shows, at 11 a.m. at the Municipal Library.
Through an image, a piece of text or a theatre play, the main theme of each show will be explored: friendship, relationship, diversity, insecurities, the desire for poetry.

Sorry, this entry is only available in Italiano.

Works from Shakespeare, Ibsen, De Filippo, Bulgakov and Mamet. Actors such as Umberto Orsini, Lunetta Savino, Luca Barbareschi, Gianfelice Imparato, Michele Riondino. Dance shows inspired by Gershwin and Shubert, the Bible revisited in a comic way by the talented Oblivion youtubers, one of the most famous musicals of all time: these are the eight shows of Spoleto’s 2018/2019 Theatre Season. All of them, except for one at Teatro Caio Melisso, will be staged at Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”.

This is a true, or almost true, story that could take place anywhere, in any city of the world. It is the story of a group of young people and of an abandoned and uncultivated green space, the only one left among buildings and concrete, the last meeting point of the children of the district. But one day that space is taken away from them to build a large gambling center owned by the local boss who dominates the entire city. From here, the story develops with their parents and LIBERA association coming to support the children’s action.
