F. Manara, C. Marini, Opera Celibe # and “Spoleto Contemporanea”, collective exhibition on artists living in Spoleto. Opening: Sat 7 Nov 2015, h 12.00
The Palazzo Collicola Visual Arts Winter Exhibitions open on Saturday 7 November at 12. The exhibitions will end on Sunday 22 May 2016.
Artistic director Gianluca Marziani chose Fausto Manara‘s “Sincronie”, Claudio Marini‘s “Fratelli di Sale”, the interactive audio installation “Deep Carpet” by Vincenzo Core at the Church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and above all a collective exhibition titled “Spoleto contemporanea. Lo sapevate che la città è ricca di energie, idee e visioni?” (Did you know the city is so rich in energies, ideas and visions?) that aims at taking stock of present-day Spoleto, a look to the present to define the coordinates of what has been done in the last years by young and veteran artists, men and women, among those who have remained and those who have returned, including those from abroad who chose Spoleto to live in: American, European and also Italian artists, who came here for a while, for a long stay or forever. The Spoleto Contemporanea exhibition will be followed, on Friday 11th December at 17 in Palazzo Mauri, by a study day titled “CONTEMPORARY SPOLETO. Hypotheses for a Convention. Theses for a Dialogue” coordinated by Andrea Tomasini.
The other exhibitions include the artistic journey of psychiatrist Fausto Manara, author of a complex project between photography and electronic language. Through some forty works, you access his flooring digital universe, a parallel world in which technology becomes painting and confirms the conceptual value of technological tools. What hits you soon is the precious epidermic weaving of the works, and the classical originality of the aesthetic plant, an uncommon vision that mixes the key to the future with the archetypes of ancient memories.
“Fratelli di sale” by Claudio Marini “starts – clarifies Marziani – where you formulate the dimension of private grief in the visual epicentre in which Claudio remembers his late brother Giancarlo: the loss as the light tracing maps in tar black. The luminous areas look like sails or lungs, two forms that both need air, to inflate and live on. Wishing to share the weight of memory, the artist has put in leaflets with numbers related to personal matters, private moments that weld the collective brotherhood with a silent frequency of the Leopardian Infinite”.
At the church of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, composer Vincenzo Core has created an intereactive audio installation titled “Deep Carpet”. “Deep Carpet” is the second step of the cycle “Opera Celibe” freely adapted from the Duchampian concept of “macchina celibe” (unmarried machine), a cycle that aims at developing, among the frescoes at the former church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo, a research on sound and memory through a series of digital art installations, with contemporary tools and experimentations discussing with the history of the place.

An anthology of dances balancing between geometry and swirl where the aerial element is the paradigm for a reflection on the boundaries of control.
Currents and storms, air fans and drones, birds and gran-jets become allegories of the relationship between choreography and dance in an investigation that bounces from the repetition to improvisation, from writing to interpretation.Among contortions and asphyxiating efforts it is triggered a respiratory exchange that mixes the volumes between body and space, audience and stage in a suspended and floating geography.

For everyone there is a moment in life when we learn to search within ourselves. toPRAY is a long and narrow passage to the human soul. We move through the symbols we have ascribed to what we cannot see, to give life a different value. They say that ‘we have a soul’. But what does it mean to ‘pray’? Perhaps our very doing is an act of worship: the contemporary man acts on the body to draw a worship. What about if the most sacred thing we possess is our imagination that allows us in the course of our life to discover our soul?

On the occasion of the 2015-2016 Prose Season’s last show “A cuore aperto”, scheduled for Friday 11 March at 21.00 at the Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti”, on Thursday 10 March at 17.00 at the Biblioteca Comunale “G. Carducci”, there will be a meeting on theatrical mediation led by mediators Erika Donini and Marco Schiavoni.
The dance, music and theatre play “A cuore aperto” by Compagnia Fabula Saltica is inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnets. A mosaic of modalities reflecting directions, differences, and the references to the play. Each of the elements on stage is the spokesman of messages of freedom, destined to an audience attuned to love in its diverse expressions, a train of emotions, gazes, sequences, in which all chase each other, a confession of spirit that makes use of reasons and autobiographical clips, love turmoils and sparks, dreams, irritation and miseries, all addressed toward a transcendental dimension, a meditation on time, the transience of power and the misleadingness of life.

ORATORIO DELLA RESURREZIONE
Address
Piazza Garibaldi
Description
The oratorio della Resurrezione is a wide, Roman-style hall in the complex of San Gregorio maggiore. The decorations, the great Resurrection on the vault and the 14 Tales of Resurrection date all to 1593 and are by painter Pierino Cesarei. Each episode has a learned caption, following the indications of the Council of Trent, that aimed at revitalizing and spreading christian contents.
Bishop Paolo Sanvitale directly commissioned the theme and the iconographic program to his collaborator Decio Gelosi, prior of the Collegiata di San Gregorio; the twos shared the love for art and antiquity.

SACELLO AI DECORATI AL VALORE DI SPOLETO, EX CASERMA MINERVIO
Address
Piazza Garibaldi
Description
The sacellum is little known, even among Spoletans, because placed in a restricted monumental complex in need of major restoration, the area of the Roman Amphitheatre. During the Middle Ages the complex served as monastery, and in the mid-XIXth century it was expropriated by the newly-born Kingdom of Italy, and served as barracks. After WWI, what was likely the apse of the church of SS. Stefano and Tommaso, was arranged to be turned into War Memorial. Names of fallen soldiers who received a badge of honour appear on its walls in fact, and the whole is decorated by wall paintings showing rural scenes, such as the representation of the seasons featuring their related agricultural activities. The sacellum was inaugurated on 4 November 1925, as testified to by a painted cartouche.

“Daddy dear, I understand your wonder which is almost a scolding: why am I here and why am I not away from all clash of arms and battles? Why should I cause this pain to my family?”
Thus wrote Spoletan lawyer Pietro Morichelli to his worried family in August 1915, after having volunteered to the front following Italy’s engagement in WWI. His words and thoughts came to us thanks to the many letters kept by his family; they portray historical fortunes that in the generous volunteer’s daily experience correspond to an intimately complex emotional frame, authentic and multifaceted: the enthusiasm of departure, the impulse that led the young lawyer to leave his desk and the certainties of a well-heeled, upper-class life, are progressively replaced by the awareness of reality, and the gap between many soldier’s patriotic trust and the cynicism of the ruling class, turn enthusiasm into unease, disillusion, dejection.
On the occasion of the celebrations for the Centennial of WWI, UmbriaEnsemble has prepared a music and reading original programme by the great historical and musicological value, featuring the letters, never published before, penned by the young Spoletan lawyer.
Saturday 26 March at 17.00, at the Complesso Monumentale di San Nicolò, the UmbriaEnsemble String Quartet (Angelo Cicillini and Cecilia Rossi, violin; Luca Ranieri, viola; M. Cecilia Berioli, cello), along with Claudio Carini’s voice (Fontemaggiore TSI) will present a new version of Casella‘s and Malipiero‘s pages, written during the Great War, as well as those by Umbrian musicians that went to the front, also unpublished. Compositions written between 1916 and 1917 and Pietro Morichelli’s letters (courtesy of Morichelli’s family), will retrace the history and tragedy of the Great War, so that such a useless carnage be no more.
