Saturday 27 June at 16.30 at the Museo del Tessuto e del Costume, the exhibition “FIBER ART” will be inaugurated, organised by the gallery Officina d’Arte&Tessuti in Spoleto with the support of the City of Spoleto. The exhibition is curated by Maria Giuseppina Caldarola, Bianca Cimiotta Lami and Lydia Predominato, with a critical text by Gianluca Marziani.
The initiative is the brainchild of the gallery with which the City Council, through the Director of Palazzo Collicola Arti Visive, Gianluca Marziani, and its Culture Department, shared the proposal and offered to be co-organiser by offering the spaces of the local Museum of Textiles and Costumes, thus seizing the related opportunity to enhance a common heritage, specifically the textile artefacts and collections preserved there.
After the “Carteggi” exhibition, which focused on paper, the “Fiber Art” exhibition is the second event of the Festival, also sponsored by Regione Umbria, which focuses on the use of fibres in contemporary art. The exhibition unfolds between the museum and the gallery where, in addition to the installation by Noushin Moghtader The Flight of Daphne, there is a video and photography section.
The exhibition presents to the public a selection of 19 artists and 35 works, a wide and heterogeneous corpus that refers to diversified poetics, from abstract to arte povera, from video to photography, with the aim of promoting the knowledge of this artistic representation in the field of contemporary art. The archetypal heritage on which Fiber-art is based is the most fascinating feature, both for the artists, who are encouraged to use fibres in the most varied forms, and for the public, who are surprised and moved to see ancestral references in front of some of these works. And it is only natural that this should be so, considering that weaving is the first complex activity through which man evolved, interacting with the environment.
It is also important to emphasise that the exhibition finds fertile ground in the Umbrian textile tradition, as Umbria can boast a strong weaving and artistic textile craftsmanship. The idea of a dialogue between past and contemporary takes shape from this background, Fiber-art as innovation and contemporary artistic expression, through the medium of textiles.
Opening: Saturday 27th June 2015, 4.30 p.m. – at the Museo del Costume e del Tessuto – Piazza Giuseppe Sordini – music by violinist Monica Pontini.
