“During the 1950s, the opera represented a much-loved Christmas television tradition. Broadcast live every year since its first performance in 1951, Amahl was the first work commissioned for television and the first one to exploit the full potential of the new medium. With a libretto (in English) of remarkable lyrical beauty, written by the composer himself, and a cast of magnificent actors and singers, Amahl perfectly achieved the goal of the founders of the NBC Opera Theatre, which was to ‘bring authenticity and realism to opera’. Tailor-made by Menotti for an audience of children, this work has been for many an enlightening introduction to the world of opera as a musical theatre. It remains over time an enchanting experience, very evocative, and finally, deeply moving”.
A post-film debate with mayor Umberto De Augustinis and the Festival artistic director Giorgio Ferrara is foreseen.
