One Year with the Spoleto Public Libraries

The activities of Spoleto’s libraries in 2020

The library holdings grow with new acquisitions and donations



▫︎ Thanks to new acquisirtions in 2020, the Carducci Library now counts more than 126.000 units, while that of the Carandente Library exceeds 31.000, not counting multimedia materials, archives, periodicals, and so on. In detail, 1.400 new books were bought thanks to public fundings, including the “Bonus Franceschini”.
▫︎ The cataloguing activity (online SBN catalogue) has included more than 6000 volumes.

▫︎ New donations, such as the Fondo Matilde Tortora focused on cinema (500 volumes, 300 films, documents, playbills, photographs, manuscripts) and the Donazione Lamberto Gentili (568 volumes and other art history material to the Carandente Library) have also enhanced the collections.


Spoleto is a “City that reads” by the growing projects

Spoleto is confirmed as a “City that reads” in 2020/ 2021: it is a special acknowledgement by the ministerial Book and Reading Centre to those city administrations which are committed in reading promotion public policies, that Spoleto first received in 2017.

Social networks: reading promotion actions in times of COVID and the numbers of a success

In order to continue, even during the emergency phase, to spread and promote reading, the Library – which was the first cultural institution in the city to reopen its services to the public after the first lockdown – continued its activities also experimenting new methods, for example by resorting to social networks and pursuing new forms of cultural enjoyment:



▪️Long Ago in Spoleto: anecdotes, characters, fortunes of the city over a period of time from the second half of the 19th century to 1950 told through 377 photos or heritage documents. 31 articles intercepting 161.793 reders in 5.913 interactions resulting in 14,693 clicks on the photos and documents and 706 hits on the city’s website.

▪️Invent a story: young readers invent stories on the basis of keywords given by the library. 7 appointments led to 21.435 visualisations and 604 interactions. The initiative recorded 731 clicks on the photos and was adopted by a school in Rome as a distance learning tool.

▪️International Games Week: three releases celebrating the universe of fantasy and comics. Facebook numbers of 3 releases: 6,639 views, 144 comments, likes and shares, 180 clicks on photos.

▪️Il Sasso nello Stagno: 3 video-readings during the Christmas period from Gianni Rodari’s stories and nursery rhymes, to mark the centenary of the great writer’s birth.

The library goes digital with MLOL (Media Library On Line)

Spoleto is included in the network of digital libraries. The promotion and dissemination of the digital lending platform (ebooks, audiobooks, etc.) was stepped up this year, with 330 users signing up.

The library and children: the experience of GIOCALIBRO



28 classes involved in the experience of the educational project among the offers of “Spoleto for school”, this year integrated with the paths of “City that reads” (in presence and online).

Continuation of the experience of the reading group that met weekly on digital platforms according to the formula “You read alone and comment together”..


Fourth Year of NOTE LETTERE: words, voices and singing recital



Three meetings were held in the Collicola Area as part of the recital series that brings together music, opera and literature in collaboration with Teatro Lirico Sperimentale: “Pharmacon” with P. Biondi, “Donne” with L. Bonamente and “Acqua Viva” on the Brazilian musical tradition with Zeetti and M. Bonucci.

“Aiutaci a crescere. Regalaci un libro



Over 2000 new volumes for the city school libraries – worth over 21,000.00 € – purchased by customers of the Giunti bookshops in Trevi and Foligno through an activity coordinated by the Carducci Library.


The great heritage of the city’s public posters



More than 1800 items of documents, notices, ordinances, posters of Spoleto between 1895 and 1915 have been transcribed into a computer document. A selection of these posters was shown to the public for the first time at the City Library in Palazzo Mauri during an exhibition on the occasion of the European Heritage Days.
