The arrival of ANTONIO CANOVA at Spoleto’s MAG – MetaMorfosi Art Gallery

Drawings, monochrome drafts, plaster works and engravings show us the moment of the work’s conception.
Thirty-one drawings, monochrome drafts, plaster works and engravings, flanked by a valuable collection of hand-written letters, are about to reach Spoleto, for the “Canova, Grace and Beauty” exhibition at the MetaMorfosi Art Gallery, the new exhibiting space at Palazzo Bufalini, piazza Duomo, Spoleto, that was opened in February with an exhibition on de Chirico, seen by more than 6,000 visitors.
The careful selection of works curated by previous director of the Museum-Library-Archives in Bassano del Grappa and of the International Research Institute on Canova and Neoclassicism, Giuliana Ericani, will be on display from Sunday 26 June 2016.
The aim of the exhibition, conceived and organized by MetaMorfosi with the support of Comune di Spoleto and Regione Umbria, is to expose the moment of inspiration that leads to the artistic creation, as it evolves from idea into project.
The great exponent of Neoclassicism will be shown through works coming from the Bassano del Grappa City Museum. The body of hand-written letters is of particular importance, as they let us retrace and understand the tight connections between the artist and Umbria.
