The series of conferences organized by Polo Museale dell’Umbria in collaboration with Astra Onlus and GraphicArte Severini goes on with Liliana Costamagna, former director of the Archaeological Museum and Roman Theatre in Spoleto.
Friday 3 March, at 16,30, there will be the conference “Luxury beyon Death:bone beds from the Alta Sabina”.
The use of beds in bone, finely decorated inside the sepulchral chamber, represents an extraordinary display of luxury for the deceased’s family, underlining their prestige and social rank on the occasion of the funeral.
The deceased were lying on variously decorated beds, coated with terracotta, bone, ivory, bronze or even golden plates, like in the case of Caesar’s or Augustus’ funerals.
Bone beds are testified to in Norcia and the Valnerina, some of which on display at the Archaeological Museum in Spoleto, they allow to study these extraordinary handicrafts in detail, exploring their technical aspects, the decorations, symbology, period and workplaces.
On the occasion of the conference, entrance is free.
