Spoleto hosts the largest Ice Crib in Italy

From 23 December to 6 January Spoleto will host an Ice Crib of 35 square meters, the largest in Italy, made by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors.
The Christmas crib will be located in Piazza Pianciani.

The work was created by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors, celebrating a centuries-old art born in the early twentieth century.

The Nativity, which will pay homage to the figure of St. Francis, will be placed inside a refrigerated truck and kept at a constant temperature of -2 °, a space where the public can admire over 18 tons of pure crystalline ice transformed into statues of real size.

The Nativity scene can be visited from 23 December to 6 January, from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 3.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m., while on Sundays from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. The 25th of December and the 1st of January it will be open only in the afternoon. The cost of the ticket is € 2.00 for adults and 1 euro for children.

During the Christmas period, on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 December, some sculptors of the Association will perform in the historic center of Spoleto to demonstrate how a work of ice is born.

The event is organized by the Italian Association of Ice Sculptors in collaboration with the City of Spoleto – Department of Culture and Development.

The Italian Association of Ice Sculptors, chaired by Amelio Mazzella, boasts numerous and prestigious participations and organizations of World competitions. The sculptors of the Association competed in ice sculpture competitions, which are part of the cultural program of the Winter Olympics, in 2002 in Salt Lake City (USA), in 2010 in Vancouver (Canada). On the occasion of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, they also organized an important event in Pragelato, involving 40 artists from 24 countries.
