International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Remembrances, meetings, films, documentaries and theatre performances to tell the story of the Holocaust tragedy and to preserve its memory, because, as Primo Levi says, “…we will do well to remind those who don’t know, and those who prefer to forget …”: these are the cultural initiatives that the Department of Culture and Tourism of the City of Spoleto has organized to celebrate January 27th, Holocaust Memorial Day, an international occasion to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust, on the day of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The programme includes Sunday, January 27th three screenings at the Cinema Sala Pegasus: at 10:00 am the award-winning Schindler’s List by Steven Spielberg. At 5 p.m., directed by Giorgio Treves, the documentary 1938, Diversi on the consequences of the implementation of racial laws in Italy. At 9.30 p.m., Chi scriverà la nostra Storia (Who will write our Story), a docu-fiction written and directed by Roberta Grossman on the story of Emanuel Ringelblum’s archive.

Also on Sunday, January 27 at 16:30, the Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti” will host The Magnificent Imposter, on the figure of Giorgio Perlasca, considered the Italian Schindler. A show, scheduled as part of the family theater review La Domenica dei Sogni, which is aimed at both families and children.
Admission is free for minors.

On Wednesday, January 30, a conference entitled Shoah, the children of survivors, in the presence of Vivi Salomon, daughter of Holocaust survivors, is scheduled at the monumental complex of San Nicolò, at 10 am. Umberto de Augustinis, Mayor of Spoleto, and Fiorella Segrestani, manager of Spoleto’s Professional Insitute for Tourism, will introduce the event. At 10.30 am Dino Renato Nardelli, from the Isuc didactic section, introduces and presents the witness. The story of Vivi Salom will be interspersed with readings and music by students of the Tourism Institute. The conference is organized in collaboration with the Institute for the History of Contemporary Umbria and the State Professional Institute for Food and Wine, Hospitality and Commercial Services for Tourism “Giancarlo De Carolis” of Spoleto.
