An unmissable Season opening on Sunday 27 October, at 5 pm, at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti in Spoleto with the national premiere of THE GOOD SOUL OF SEZUAN by Bertolt Brecht, directed and performed by Monica Guerritore, featuring Matteo Cirillo, Alessandro Di Somma, Vincenzo Gambino, Nicolò Giacalone, Francesco Godina, Diego Migeni and Lucilla Mininno.
Three gods arrive in search of some good soul in the capital of the Chinese province of Sezuan; they only find one, prostitute Shen Te, who hosts them for the night. The unexpected compensation for this act of goodness is a thousand silver dollars, a life-changing sum for Shen Te. But the compensation is accompanied by the commandment to continue to practice goodness. Poor Shen Te opens a tobacco shop to immediately find herself pestered by a swarm of parasites, false and real relatives in need, who demand with ferocity and from which she is forced to defend herself. To do it, one night, he disguises himself as a bad cousin, Shui Ta, ruthless with everyone. To make things even more complicated, love intervenes.
“In The Good Souls there is all the tenderness and love for human beings forced by poverty and suffering to devour each other but always told with the tender and funny look of those who understand – writes Monica Guerritore in her notes. In these harsh years only theatre can talk to us from within, and make us aware of the growling masks we are becoming. Staging the wonderful parable by Brecht responds to the civil and political mission of my profession. Civil, political, poetry theatre.”
