Ten artists from U.S.A., Great Britain, Finland, Italy, Hungary, Norway
On Friday 9 July from 5 to 8 p.m., in the historic centre of Spoleto “Open window” offers a chance encounter with sounds coming from open windows along an itinerary through the streets and alleys of the city centre. Ten artists explore the meeting point between inside and outside, the private world and public space. Passers-by are immersed in a sudden acoustic adventure from an unexpected place.

Spoleto, Umbria, is home to the annual Festival Of Two Worlds and has a rich historical tradition of art and entertainment. The acoustic conditions in the streets and alleys of Spoleto are ideal for inviting artists in the field of sound art, music, performance and hybrid media, offering sound perceptions in a different context than the theatres, galleries and other venues of the Festival.
The public is invited to follow a precise route through the streets and squares, some of which are less well known, of downtown Spoleto, to discover the sound works that are activated simultaneously throughout the event.
The open window is clearly recognisable as the source of the sound, but the nature of the sound itself can be ambiguous and not necessarily interpreted as an intentional artistic intervention. Listening becomes an enigmatic moment that provokes curiosity and raises questions about what we have heard ‘by chance’. An open window… a portal… a point of transit…
In this second edition of “Open window”, 10 windows host acoustic interventions by Mike Cooper (UK), A K Dolven (NO), Sean Dower (UK), Folwark (IT), Juha van Ingen (FI), Donatella Landi (IT), Louise Lawler (USA), Nea Lindgren (FI), Sarah Rapson (UK) and Sándor Vály (HU/FI).
The itinerary map is available at: Bar Casbah, Bar Duelle, Bar Tebro, Caffe Collicola, Piazza San Filippo Neri newsagent’s, Piazza Vittoria newsagent’s, Piazza Torre dell’Olio newsagent’s, Sala Pegasus, Tabaccheria il Borgaccio. Ticket Office Spoleto Festival dei Due Mondi, Tourist Information Office, Largo Ferrer, 6
The route can be taken in any direction and at any time between 5pm and 8pm.
