International Dance Competition: Classical ballet is back in town

Ballet and repertory dance are about to return on stage to retrace their true identity. Everything is ready to welcome the 29th edition of the IDC, International Dance Competition, which every year attracts dancers from all over the world ready to challenge each other on variations that have made the history of classical dance and on modern and contemporary choreographies.

A highlight of the event are the master classes held by teachers of classical and modern technique who will be available to the youngsters (including those eliminated in the various stages of the competition) for the entire duration of the event. In addition, this year’s programme will be enriched by Danza Chi Come e Perché (Dance: Who, How and Why), an appointment led and devised by Sara Zuccari, who will meet the young participants in the competition for a moment of reflection, discussion and comparison of dance history and life history, a chat with many voices, to help the youngsters understand the world of dance not only technically but also culturally. The event will be broadcast live on Facebook on the page of Giornale della Danza, the first Italian online sector newspaper.

The IDC International Dance Competition will take place from 17 to 22 July at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, will be sponsored by the City of Spoleto and included in the “Spoleto d’estate 2021” programme.

As per tradition, the Gala evening will close the choreographic kermesse by awarding the Gran Prix Fondazione Carispo, which brought so much luck to the winners of the past editions; one of them, Gabriele Fornaciari, awarded in 2019, will return as a guest this year to perform a pas de deux with Giordana Granata, a dancer from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. The Gala will become even more international thanks to the presence of Petra Conti, principal guest dancer of the Los Angeles Ballet, and Margherita Parrilla representing the International Federation Ballet Competition, a federation that brings together the most prestigious dance competitions in the world, including Spoleto, the only one in Italy.

The Gala will be open to the public, although access will be limited to 256 seats due to covid-19 restrictions. You may want to book your ticket in advance by calling +39 328 3078377.

“After months of work, we have defined the jury for the 2021 edition, which will be chaired by Maria Grazia Garofoli, formerly étoile of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice and Director of the Corps de Ballet of the Arena di Verona. The Australian lockdown has prevented the arrival of our Francesco Ventriglia, who will be replaced by his colleague Igor Yebra, formerly Artistic Director of the Ballet Nacional Sodre, Uruguay and current company director. The jury is completed by Lukas Timulak, an internationally renowned choreographer, Oleksy Bessmertni, Director of the National Academy of Dance in Kiev and general manager of the Tanzolymp Berlin competition, and Sara Zuccari, journalist, historian, dance critic, director of the Giornale della Danza, creator and president of the jury that awards the Critics’ Prize”, said Artistic Director Irina Kashkova.

“Ours is by definition an international event and we have managed to keep it that way despite the restrictions due to Covid. The closing Gala will feature world-class guests, which we are very proud of, and we look forward to the participation of the people of Spoleto, even though there will be fewer places than in the past. We are proud to bring real dance back to Spoleto after a long absence”, said General Director Paolo Boncompagni.
