Teachers include Roberto De Candia and Marina Comparato, both winners of the Spoleto contest, and maestros Raffaele Cortesi and Enza Ferrari
After the successful masterclass held by the mezzo-soprano Marina Comparato in June, this week the new voices of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale have been engaged in masterclasses with Roberto De Candia – winner of the Spoleto Competition in 1990 and one of the greatest interpreters of the comic repertoire who has performed on the most important international stages, among them the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Opéra Comique in Paris and the Metropolitan Opera House in New York – and with Enza Ferrari – a teacher at the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan who over the years has collaborated with leading national and international musical institutions. The singing lessons given by the Apulian baritone and the music lessons given by Maestro Ferrari focused both on the repertoire of the young promises and on the operas and concerts scheduled for this 75th Experimental Opera Season of Spoleto and Umbria.

“De Candia’s great openness and willingness to help,’ says Maria Stella Maurizi, first prize-winner of the 2021 Singing Competition, ‘enabled all of us to immediately establish a relationship of great harmony with the maestro, who managed to create a particularly fruitful exchange from both a human and a technical point of view. In the masterclass with Maestro Ferrari, on the other hand, we had the opportunity to meet a woman with great experience who, thanks to her precise instructions, enabled us to grasp the incredible nuances contained in the score’.

The school of national excellence for the introduction of young opera singers to their debut is a highly educational activity, whose main objective is to offer the young talents, selected by the Singing Competition, a training that goes beyond the strict preparation of the operas, but which provides a whole series of notions useful for embarking on a theatrical career. Returning to Spoleto as a teacher,” says De Candia, “is an extraordinary experience that I recommend to everyone. Teaching to singers I continue to stay at the Sperimentale as a student, learning from the relationship with other generations”.

In addition to daily lessons with Maestros Mariachiara Grilli, Lorenzo Masoni and Luca Spinosa, during the two-month course there were also lessons in sheet music with Maestro Raffaele Cortesi – a pianist and master collaborator who has been performing for years in the most prestigious international theatres, including the Accademia di S. Cecilia, St John’s Smith Square in London and Symphony Hall Osaka – of vocal hygiene with Dr. Graziano Brozzi, of administrative self-organisation with Dr. Renzo Rossi and of elements of hair and make-up with Dr. Clelia De Angelis.

A full calendar of events with teachers and big names in opera awaits the young talents of the Sperimentale in the coming months. From Monday, in fact, they will be engaged in a week of master classes with Maestro Marco Boemi, for the preparation of the roles to be debuted in the season and other repertoire. In August, moreover, singing lessons will be held with soprano Donata D’Annunzio Lombardi and, finally, in the last days of September, soprano Mariella Devia will return to Spoleto for a masterclass, after being president of the jury of the 75th edition of the “European Community” Competition for young opera singers.
The young voices will perform in the coming months on the occasion of the 75th Experimental Opera Season, which will be held from 6 August to 25 September in Spoleto and in the main theatres of Umbria, and in various concerts between Spoleto, the Valnerina and Lazio.
