The lessons for the new voices of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale are resuming and, until Friday 1 October, the singers will attend a masterclass with Mariella Devia.

The 75th Experimental Opera Season has come to an end and, despite the Covid-19 restrictions, it has been possible to offer the public an opera season full of performances, one-off events and new productions. And in particular this year when, in parallel with the season, two exhibitions, a conference and a concert were held in Spoleto on the occasion of the celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Institution.

For 2021, one of the main objectives of the programming was to propose original titles: this was the case for the operas Giovanni Sebastiano by Gino Negri, The Rape of Lucretia by Benjamin Britten, the new critical edition of the intermezzo L’ammalato immaginario by Leonardo Vinci and the operalieder evening L’amore da lontano.

The staging of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly was a great challenge from another point of view; in fact, it is never easy to deal with a famous title that is so loved by opera enthusiasts and not only, but the warm welcome of the public repaid all the efforts of the many artists involved. Finally, the Umbrian tour – which saw the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale perform in Perugia at the Teatro Morlacchi, in Foligno at the Politeama Clarici, in Città di Castello at the Teatro degli Illuminati, in Todi at the Teatro Comunale and in Terni at the Teatro Sergio Secci – was a fundamental testing ground for the new voices, who were able to put themselves to the test every evening in different contexts. And so this year too, the bet can be said to have been won, as demonstrated by the more than positive response from the enthusiastic public.

However, it is important not to forget the fulcrum around which this stage machine revolves: the development of young opera singing talents. During the season, the winners of the 2020 and 2021 European Community Competitions had the opportunity to make their debuts, interpreting a wide variety of parts and putting themselves to the test with repertoires sometimes even away from their own vocal style. The success of these performances bodes well for the future operatic career of the new voices of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, who, as of this morning, have returned to attend the lessons of the high specialization course that will see them engaged in a Masterclass with Mariella Devia until Friday, October 1st.
In 2021 the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale was awarded the TARGA DEL PRESIDENTE DELLA REPUBBLICA for its 75 years of activity.
The 2021 activities are made possible thanks to the Ministry of Culture, Regione Umbria, the City of Spoleto, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Spoleto, the Francesca, Valentina and Luigi Antonini Foundation and thanks to the collaboration of the Province of Perugia and the Cities of Perugia, Foligno, Città di Castello, Todi and Terni.
