Autumn Days of the Italian Environment Fund in Spoleto

Sunday 17 October at h 10.00 am, hike along the Olive Groves’ Path from Eggi to Bazzano Superiore

On the occasion of the Autumn Days, the FAI (Italian Environment Fund) Group of Spoleto proposes a walk along the Sentiero degli Ulivi (Olive Groves Path) from Eggi to Bazzano Superiore on Sunday 17th October; the route is about 10 km long (round trip) and can be covered, including a packed-lunch break, in an estimated time of 5 hours.

Meeting is at h 10.30, at the entrance of Eggi, by the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where you’ll be able to park.

The walk winds its way through the Spoleto-Assisi olive-growing area, the main one in Umbria, and passes through the territory of six municipalities located in the central part of Umbria: Spoleto, Campello sul Clitunno, Trevi, Foligno, Spello and Assisi.

It is a unique landscape of the Apennine foothills, shaped by thousands of years of olive cultivation and by the culture of the local people, who have made it “an example of a living cultural landscape, a combined work of nature and man“. Due to its extraordinary nature, this landscape has received important recognition: first the Ministry of Agriculture certified its cultural and environmental value by entering it in the National Register of Historic Landscapes; then the FAO included it in the GIAHS programme, Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems; now it has been included in the Italian ‘Tentative list’ for UNESCO to obtain recognition as a Living Cultural Evolutionary Landscape.

The trekking proposed for this occasion starts from Eggi, crosses the village and climbs up through the olive groves to a small pass at an altitude of 500 metres above sea level. From there it descends towards the village of Bazzano Inferiore, which is crossed by passing the church and the public gardens, at the end of which there is a spring of drinking water for your supply. On leaving the village, you’ll climb up a narrow path to an old fountain and then enter the village of Bazzano Superiore. On the return journey, you’ll follow the route already described in reverse order.

The path is mainly dirt and stony, and in some places it is slippery due to the presence of stones that are not embedded in the ground. For this reason it is compulsory to wear hiking boots with non-slip tread and the use of trekking poles is strongly recommended.

There are no refreshment points along the route, so a packed lunch with an adequate water supply is recommended (there is, however, a water supply point in the village of Bazzano Inferiore).

To participate it is necessary to book online and be a Green Pass holder.
