Third and last appointment with Spoleto Jazz Season 2021 which, after the concerts by pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and the Reis Demuth Wiltgen Trio, returns with Matthias Bartolomey and Klemens Bittmann, on the stage of Teatro Caio Melisso – Spazio Carla Fendi on Friday 12 November at 9 pm.

The two musicians from Vienna, the cradle of musical avant-garde in the 19th and 20th centuries, will close the second edition of the Spoleto Jazz Season, an event promoted and organised by the Associazione Visioninmusica, with their “progressive” way of composing and their original repertoire aesthetically connected to the musical world of today. What Matthias Bartolomey (cello) and Klemens Bittmann (violin and mandola) have in common is their passion for the search for new sounds, expressed through the use of ancient string instruments, including the mandola – a plucked string instrument from the lute family – which Bittmann does not consider an extravagant quirk but an element that can further expand the sound range.

Bartolomey and Bittmann are academically trained at the Universität für Musik in Graz and Vienna respectively. In their pieces, dynamics and intensity vary with sensitivity and precision, the energy of rock alternates with the elegance and intimacy of chamber music, the free inventiveness of jazz also gives way to lyrical and emotional depth. There are references to folk music and, from time to time, classical roots also emerge, never disavowed. The duo’s subtitle is progressive strings vienna and their philosophy is condensed into these three terms. Their latest album, which will be played live in Spoleto, is entitled Dynamo.
