76th Opera Season
2 – 3 September 2022 at 8.30 pm – 4 September 2022at 5.00 pm
premiered at the Caio Melisso Theatre in Spoleto

Spoleto, 27 August 2022 – La porta divisoria, an opera by Fiorenzo Carpi to a libretto by Giorgio Strehler based on the famous short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, is a one-act play divided into five scenes, which has remained unfinished. The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale entrusted Alessandro Solbiati with the composition of the fifth picture, while the reduction for ensemble was entrusted to Matteo Giuliani.
Buried for years in the Historical Archive of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano, La porta divisoria had been commissioned to Carpi around the mid-1950s by the then artistic director Victor de Sabata, and had appeared on the billboards of the Piccola Scala in the 1956/57 and 1957/58 seasons, without ever being staged. For unknown reasons, the opera remained unfinished. Carpi’s music is an experimentation in which atonal music, dodecaphony, concrete music and gravitation harmony converge, “a very significant and suggestive piece of the complex mosaic of Italian art music of the 1950s”, comments co-artistic director Enrico Girardi. Strehler’s text retraces the plot of Kafka’s tale, focusing, through Gregorio’s story, on the themes of incommunicability and marginalisation of the different.
Conducting the Ensemble of the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale ‘A. Belli’ in Spoleto is Marco Angius. The direction is by Giorgio Bongiovanni, with sets by Andrea Stanisci, costumes by Clelia de Angelis and lighting by Eva Bruno. Assistant director Biancamaria D’Amato.
On stage are the winning or eligible singers of the “European Community” Competitions for young opera singers of Spoleto 2021 and 2022, as well as those that the Artistic Direction has selected from among the singers who submitted to auditions and winning singers of previous editions: Davide Romeo in the role of Gregorio; Elena Finelli, Oronzo D’Urso and Davide Romeo as the three interpreters of Gregorio’s Voice; Giacomo Pieracci and Alfonso Michele Ciulla as Gregorio’s Father; Simone Van Seumeren and Antonia Fino will be the Mother; Antonia Salzano and Veronica Aracri the Sister; Davide Peroni will be the Manager; Elena Salvatori and Federica Tuccillo respectively the First Maid and the Second Maid; Oronzo D’Urso, Davide Peroni and Giordano Farina the First, the Second and the Third Pensioner. Preparing the singers in the months leading up to the performance was the maestro preparatore and collaborator Antonio Vicentini.

The presentation meeting of the show will be held on Friday 2 September 2022 at 7 p.m., at the Polid’arte Gallery in Piazza della Signoria in Spoleto. Free entrance. Together with the composer’s daughter Martina Carpi, artistic director Michelangelo Zurletti, co-director Enrico Girardi, music director Marco Angius, director Giorgio Bongiovanni and composers Alessandro Solbiati and Matteo Giuliani will be present.
