Final appointment for the jazz music festival included in the programme of summer events organised by the City of Spoleto
Thursday 8 September 2022, Spazio Collicola

Last appointment for “Collicola Jazz Connection”, the jazz festival organised by Marco Sarti and Consorzio ZdB and included in the ‘Accade d’estate a Spoleto’ programme of events, on Thursday 8 September at 9 p.m. at Spazio Collicola.

It will feature Tekna feat Greg Burk, Joe Rehmer, John B. Arnold, special guest ‘Ubik’ Marco Bonini. The project, the brainchild of New York City drummer John B. Arnold, Detroit pianist Greg Burk and Roman electronic musician Marco ‘UBIK’ Bonini, pushes into new territory with a sound that can only be described as ‘hypnotic’. TEKNA is an acoustic anomaly, combining the percussive structure of electronic music with the improvisation of jazz, borrowing from both but belonging to neither.
Composer and drummer John B. Arnold, grandson of American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael (Georgia on my Mind, Stardust, the Nearness of You), has a long discography as a jazz artist and his passion for electronic music inspired him to create Calcatronica, a three-day electronic music festival in Italy. Pianist and keyboardist Greg Burk is a bandleader and composer in his own right who has worked extensively with DJ Carl Craig. “UBIK” is an experienced musician with a long history in the world of electronic music. The group will also be joined by American bassist Joe Rehmer who grew up breathing the musical and cultural atmosphere of the Windy City (Chicago), played with musicians such as Jim Black, Bob Mintzer, James Moody and Danny Gottlieb and in Italy, appeared in a series of concerts at Umbria Jazz with Claudio Filippini’s trio.
Frustrated by the lack of innovation in modern jazz, John B. Arnold created TEKNA to embody the drive of techno with the soul of jazz composition, which is why the piano and drums are recorded live. But more than anything else, it is a tribute to both jazz and electronic music that strives to answer the question: what comes next?
In the now crowded panorama of summer events dedicated to jazz, the new Collicola Jazz Connection festival, presented last year, has rightfully earned its place.
The event has set the sounds of artists who, starting from the language of jazz, contaminate it with musical idioms from countries and cultures that are now an integral part of the heritage of contemporary music, in a place that is a symbol of the Italian artistic avant-garde: Palazzo Collicola, one of the most important noble buildings in Spoleto.
