The Job of the Left
Russia’s war on Ukraine heralded the return of Politics. The ‘End of History’, celebrated in ’89, was the fable told by the winners: the Great Recession of 2008, Brexit, the election of Donald Trump and, most recently, the pandemic have demonstrated the unsustainability of liberalist market regulation. With eight memos, Stefano Fassina reminds the Left of the social interests to be represented and the indispensable commitments it must fulfil in order to do its job, within the framework of an adult Atlanticism and a conscious Europeanism. It also proposes an essential list of authors to be studied in order to give oneself a solid intellectual foundation and address the crucial issue before us: the reconquest of the primacy of Politics over Economics. This is the necessary condition for ‘making’ peace and for introducing identity, social and environmental constraints on the movement of capital, goods, services and people. Thus, for the centrality of the person, the dignity and political subjectivity of labour, the salvation of the planet, in short, for an integral neo-humanism.
Upcoming appointments with conferences organised by the Associazione Amici di Spoleto Onlus include two book presentations, Domenico Benedetti Valentini’s “Spoleto, Tribunale dell’Umbria centrale” (date to be announced) and Pietro Del Re’s “I dimenticati” (The Forgotten) on Friday 18 November at 4 p.m. at the Rocca Albornoz as part of the 18th edition of the “Walter Tobagi” propaedeutic course in journalism.
