Spoleto, the city in a crib

Widespread exhibition of crib art organised by the PRO Loco di Spoleto with the patronage of the City of Spoleto. The exhibitions will remain open until 14 January 2023

Saturday 10 December saw the opening of the 12th edition of the artistic and cultural event ‘Spoleto, The City in a Crib’, which will end, as usual, on 14 January 2023.

After the Sacred Blessing imparted by Don Pierluigi Morlino, in the presence of deputy mayor Stefano Lisci, councillors Danilo Chiodetti, Letizia Pesci and Agnese Protasi, and Pro Loco President Patrizia Colangeli, the ribbon was cut to officially open the exhibition, allowing the public present to see the cribs on display.

About three hundred works are on display, a journey of knowledge of crib art through the work of artists from almost all Italian regions. Together with the classic nativity scenes, one can admire real rarities, miniature constructions such as the nativity scene made inside a tiny light bulb or a camera shutter.

Numerous collaborations are also enriching the event this year, such as the now well-established one with the students of the Istituto Istruzione Superiore “Sansi Leonardi Volta” who have realised The Nativity exhibited at the exit of the treadmill at the Giro della Rocca.

The halls of the former civic museum in Via del Duomo, open daily from 10.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., in addition to the exhibition of cribs by artists from Spoleto and other cities, host Rosanna Mazzoni’s ‘Il Presepio’ (The Crib) and the works of the 11th ‘Creatività Giovanile delle scuole del comprensorio spoletino‘ (Youth Creativity of the Schools of the Spoleto district) exhibition competition.

In the Sala degli Ori, in Via Saffi, a personal exhibition of artistic nativity scenes by the artist Maurizio Piergiacomi from Macerata has been set up and can be visited from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

The sacred forest of Monteluco will provide an evocative backdrop to the artistic nativity scene by Rosella Campelletti.

For the occasion, the San Matteo degli Infermi Hospital in Spoleto also created a crib that will be displayed in the paediatrics department.

Once again this year, the families of the Spoleto area, who are involved in all the events organised by the Pro Loco as a mission, are invited to show their nativity scene by participating in the ‘Presepi in famiglia‘ (Family Nativity Scenes) competition, now in its 11th edition, in which the best nativity scene set up at home will be awarded a prize.

Two other competitions frame the 2022-2023 review: ‘Youth Creativity of the Spoleto district schools‘, now in its 11th edition, and ‘Crib in the Pro Loco di Spoleto‘, in its 1st edition.

Among the many activities that the Pro Loco proposes this year is the poetry and music reading ‘On the way to the stars’, organised in synergy with the ‘Fare Cultura‘ association, which will be held in the Antonelli Hall in the Parish of San Gregorio, and the Christmas greeting lunch with traditional tombola on Sunday 18 December in the Zengoni Restaurant (to book call 0743 46484 or 366 111 9835).

We congratulate the Pro Loco for its constant commitment and the attention it has paid to the realisation of this initiative for years,” were the words of deputy mayor Stefano Lisci and councillor Danilo Chiodetti on the occasion of the inauguration. “The exhibition is truly surprising in terms of its wealth of characters and minutiae of detail, and it is truly worth a visit. It is an opportunity to experience various evocative locations in the city enhanced by the works on display. The nativity scene is not a decoration for its own sake, but a true expression of Christmas, a shared way of feeling the festivities to which everyone can add flair, imagination and creativity‘.
