Massimo Popolizio makes his national debut in Spoleto

A national premiere in Spoleto, Uno sguardo dal ponte by Arthur Miller debuts on Tuesday 31 January at 8.45 p.m. at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, directed by Massimo Popolizio, who will be on stage with Valentina Sperlì, Michele Nani, Raffaele Esposito, Lorenzo Grilli, Gaja Masciale, Felice Montervino, Marco Mavaracchio and Gabriele Brunelli. The translation is by Masolino D’Amico and the co-production is by Compagnia Umberto Orsini, Teatro di Roma – Teatro Nazionale and Emilia Romagna Teatro ERT / Teatro Nazionale.
Massimo Popolizio’s director notes – Writes Miller: “The action of the play consists in the horror of a passion that, despite being contrary to the interests of the individual who is dominated by it, despite all the warnings he receives and despite the fact that it destroys his moral principles, continues to cloak its power over him to the point of destruction”. Here, this concept of the inevitability of fate and passions by which one can be overcome and annihilated is a ‘drive’ or ‘necessity’ that I think can still have a strong theatrical impact today.
All the action is one long flash-back. Eddie Carbone, the protagonist, enters the scene when the whole audience already knows that he is dead. For me, this is a wonderful opportunity to stage a text that clearly looks a lot like a film script, and as such, needs close-ups, second shots and long shots.
In the light of all the material that this text has been able to generate from 1955 (date of its first performance) to the present day, i.e. films, photographs, television series, I think it might be interesting and ‘fun’ to have a theatrical version that takes all these ‘children’ into account. A great story… told like a film… but on a theatre stage, with the acting that theatre requires, the rhythms of a series and the music of a film.
There will be a bridge, there will be a road and on this road there will be furniture, which are the memory of the Carbone family… Lawyer Alfieri arrives, his function resembles that of a Greek chorus, he is present in the story and at the same time he is a spectator offstage, he introduces us into the affair which, we must not forget, originates from a crime story from which Miller was deeply disturbed.
