At the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti in Spoleto, included in the 2022/23 Theatre Season, on Sunday 26 February at 5pm it is the turn of dance with Première, the new production of the Balletto di Roma with choreography by Andrea Costanzo Martini, an artist active on the international scene and already the author of Intro for the Roman company in 2018.
On stage, directed by Francesca Magnini: Serena Marchese, Carola Puddu, Giulia Strambini, Virginia Vorraro, Nicola Barbarossa, Paolo Barbonaglia, Alessio Di Traglia, Francesco Moro.
Why do we dance? This question arises before each new creation and the answer comes, never complete, in the most unexpected moments: very brief fragments, brief glimpses inside an indefinable sensation. Moments when we realise that there is a meaning greater than ourselves, that we are an infinitesimal part of a vast cosmic design.
Première was born from Andrea Costanzo Martini’s meeting with the dancers of the Balletto di Roma and his fascination for these young artists who pursue their desire for movement, both as a personal feeling and as a common need.
Première celebrates humanity, investigates the biographies, the unique and unrepeatable stories of each one. What alignment of stars and planets has allowed them to be here on this stage, ready and willing to sacrifice something for us spectators? Première reveals to us that a dance company is at bottom a village, a tribe, with its basic needs trying to be met by organisation in codes and rules. Between lights and shadows, as in the spotlight. Especially in the light of the pandemic events, after a long forced hiatus, away from the theatres, the question has arisen: how do we return to a stage? What drives us to perform, to be watched, to expose ourselves to the eyes of the audience? What do we give to be seen? And what is it about us that is impossible to hide when we are on stage? Première thus becomes a ritual made up of emotional and intense applause, the only point of contact between the performers themselves and the missed audience. A dedication to all those who have worked and are still struggling for a return of the body to life. A celebration in which dance is a medium capable of recreating the conditions for a new beginning. A return – again – to our first time.
