She will come to Spoleto on Saturday 6 January, in piazza Duomo, on a rumbling vintage car. She’s a supportive Befana who carries a tangible aid to the lesser lucky ones in her traditional stockings.
It is a charitable event organised by Scuderia Campello and by C.U.A.E. (Club Umbro Automotoveicolo d’epoca) – Terni, chaired by Liborio Libori, true “charity veteran” and vintage cars enthusiast.
The Raduno della Befana will start at 09.00 by the Spoleto Sud access to town; 40ish teams will attend aboard as many vintage cars, that’ll then stroll through downtown Spoleto, and arrive at Piazza del Duomo, one of the most beautiful squares in the world, featured in films, fictions and tv ads by great film directors.
Participants will then reach the Sala Frau on foot, to attend a concert by pianist Elena Moschetti of the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia, starting at 10.00.
After the concert, participants will return to Piazza Duomo, to attend the Epiphany Mass at 11.30, celebrated by Spoleto – Norcia Archbishop and President of the Episcopal Conference of Umbria, Mons. Renato Boccardo.
The Choir of the Duomo Musical Chapel conducted by Maestro Francesco Corrias will perfom during the mass.
Archbishop Boccardo will bless the teams at the end of the celebration. From Piazza Duomo, the parade will then stroll again through downtown Spoleto, to head out toward the Fonti del Clitunno.
Included in the End-Of-The-Year’s events, the Italian Red Cross local section organises the Christmas Witch Fest on 6 January at 14.30 in Piazza Garibaldi.
At 15.30 the Christmas Witch will arrive on a “special” vehicle made available by Aleandro Piccioni, handing out candies and sweets.
The event aims at arousing children through the emotional arrival of the Christmas Witch, and to spread the knowledge on the Red Cross activities, that include public health, promotion of well-being and collective aggregation.

The series of theatre plays for families La Domenica dei Sogni returns again to promote love for theatre among the young. Conceived by Vincenzo Cerami in 2009, it offers children and their families cheerful Sunday afternoon theatre plays by nationwide-famous, award-winning, world-touring Italian companies.
Plays will all be staged at the Teatro Nuovo “Gian Carlo Menotti” on Sundays at 16.30.
The seven plays on schedule will deal with themes including juvenile social disease, family relations and school. The series is conceived for various ages, from children in kindergarten to kids at the primary school.
Theatre mediation at Palazzo Mauri is also part of the project. The day before the play there will be a meeting at the Public Library at 11.00, led by teachers Lorella Natalizi and Mauro Pietrini of the Associazione Teodelapio.
The meetings will offer the occasion to highlight the themes of the plays, ie friendship, relations, differences, lack of self-confidence, lust for poetry.

After its successful tour in the Middle East, the Ballet Flamenco Español will perform in Italy with Flamenco en vivo.
The Spanish dance company will be at Spoleto’s Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti next January 27, at 21.00.
A show with a live orchestra that will lead viewers into the most fascinating of gypsy cultures. The dancers’ virtuosity, on the boards of the tablao, is interwoven with the sound architectures created by a quartet of masters of flamenco music.
The show, under the artistic direction of Juan Manuel Carrillo and Luis Ortega, features 10 dancers and presents flamenco art in its purest version, the expression of a culture of rhythmic movement, and of a music handed down orally since the fifteenth century.
Over the decades, thanks to the Gypsies’ migrations, dance and music have been mixed and enriched with Middle Eastern and South American cultures. Flamenco en vivo offers a tour around the world involving the spectator with its archaic yet refined expressive power.

Hours to serve during the unpredictable days at Psychiatric-Alcatraz. In the joint, people become a code, numbers; their bodies face abuse and tyranny, till they become empty boxes, caged objects. Who’s the criminal then? Is it the one who disobeys common rules, or is it a hypocrite body that only sees conviction as a punishment? The penitentiary’s director is a doubtless one: convicts are just outlaws and must be treated as such.
Be ready to catch hell then, for hell is your sentence; the joint is a maze, an inside that throws its dark light on a mirroring outside. Only when you’ll hear the clash of the gate that closes behind you, you’ll understand that your life is over.
After the success of Psychiatric Circus, through aerial numbers, music, acrobatics and hilarious sketches, the company enacts a new, irreverent show where artists from all over the world will show their breath of life, their longing for liberty and escape. Never-ending emotions, inspiring images and healthy laughters; ain’t nothing better than provoking thoughts with a smile.

On the occasion of the Lightquake 2017 exhibition, taking place at Spoleto’s Rocca Albornoz, the conference Lo Spazio della Luce (The Space of Light) is scheduled for Friday February 9th. A meeting to discuss how light shapes the urban space, enhancing the architectural value of buildings thus becoming a free sign in the work of art. The meeting will take place at 3 p. m. at Rocca Albornoz.
Nearly one hundred years after the publication of the book Towards a New Architecture by Le Corbusier, where the great Swiss architect speaks of the duality of light as essential for the livability of space and for the plasticity of the building’s architectural form, in recent years we have come to give the same qualitative importance to what artificial light expresses. Le Corbusier wrote that “Architecture is the skillful, appropriate and magnificent game of volumes under light“. Throughout this century, we have been watching the temporal extension of daily visual quality. Darkness has become the blackboard on which to draw new visual forms and revolutionize the concept of lighting through technology.
Paola Mercurelli Salari – Director of Rocca Albornoz – National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto, Camilla Laureti – Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Spoleto, Gianluca Bellucci – President of Sistema Museo, Maria Luisa Guerrini – President of the Architects’ Professional Association of Perugia and Stefano Mancini – President of the Engineers’ Professional Association of Perugia, will open the conference. The meeting will be chaired by architect Fabio Fabiani (OFARCH Officina d’Architettura).
Following interventions: scenographer Sebastiano Romano with “Light Scenographies in the urban space”, lighting designer Filippo Cannata di Cannata & Partners with “The rooms of light”, professor and engineer Marco Frascarolo of the University of Rome Tre with “Light up the city and its monuments” and professor Gisella Gellini of the Politecnico di Milano Scuola del Design with “LIGHT ART art-design-technology”.
The conference will end with a guided tour of the exhibition Lightquake 2017 “Black Light Art – Lighting Coloring the Dark”, with the co-curator Dr. Claudia Bottini and Sistema Museo.

2017/2018 Prose Season
27 October 2017 – 8 March 2018
Ottavia Piccolo, Massimo Dapporto, Monica Guerritore, Francesca Reggiani, Asia Argento, Filippo Dini, David Coco, Liv Ferracchiati are but some of the protagonists of the Spoleto 2017-2018 Prose Season that includes 7 plays, six at the Teatro Nuovo and one at the Caio Melisso.
The start is on Friday 27 October at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo “Menotti” with Occident Express (Haifa è nata per star ferma). Written by Stefano Massini, it features Ottavia Piccolo and the Orchestra Multietnica di Arezzo. In 2015 an old woman from Mosul flees with her 4-yo granddaughter, covering 5.000 Km from Iraq to the Baltic Sea, across the so-called Balcan Route. This is her story.
Friday 24 November at 21, at the Teatro Nuovo, it’s the turn of Mariti e Mogli, adapted and directed by Monica Guerritore who is also in the cast along with Francesca Reggiani. The play is freely adapted from Woody Allen’s much praised film.
Saturday 9 December at 21, again at the Teatro Nuovo, Massimo Dapporto is the protagonist of Un borghese piccolo piccolo, extraordinary novel by Vincenzo Cerami who inspired Monicelli’s cinema masterpiece, a tragic comedy that offers hilarious moments. Adaptation and direction by Fabrizio Coniglio.
Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 January at 21 and Wednesday 10 January at 18 at the Teatro Caio Melisso – spazio Carla Fendi, it is the time of Todi is a small town in the center of Italy, written and directed by Liv Ferracchiati. What is life like in an Italian small town? Michele, Stella, Elisa and Caroline are four guys from Todi. A fifth character, a documentarist, connects fiction to reality observing and noting the features of the city and its inhabitants. What is life like in a place where everybody knows everyone? What should you rather avoid doing in Todi? These are but some of the questions that were actually asked to more than a hundred people in Todi, that the play aims at giving back through a collage that supports the story of the four protagonists.
Saturday 20 January at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo, the Györ Ballet Company (one of the oldest, most praised European contemporary dance companies) will stage two masterpieces, Maurice Ravel’s Bolero and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.
Friday 9 February at 21, Teatro Nuovo, Il Giuramento by Claudio Fava, directed by Ninni Bruschetta and featuring David Coco. Heads, you can count them or cut them. The fascist regime didn’t choose one. It counted 1238 and cut twelve, casual heroes of those who only have left an extreme resource of dignity, that of refusal. This happened on 13 November 1931. The theatre play tells the story of one of them.
Thursday 8 March at 21 at the Teatro Nuovo, the closing play will be Rosalind Franklin. Il segreto della vita by Anna Ziegler, directed by Filippo Dini, featuring Asia Argento, Filippo Dini. The Great History, the discovery of DNA, and the extraordinary tale of scientist Rosalind Franklin’s last years, facing one of the most important, debated discoveries in the history of scientific research.

On the occasion of the National Memorial Day of the Exiles and Foibe, established to preserve and renew the memory of the victims of the foibe and the Istrian-Dalmatian exodus, the Municipality of Spoleto organizes two events: the screening, at Sala Frau, of a documentary on the tragedy of the exodus and a round table at the municipal library with various contributions on the theme.
The first appointment is scheduled for Saturday 10 February with a double screening, at Cinema Sala Frau, of the documentary film Magna Istria by Cristina Mantis. At 10.30 am the screening is reserved for students and at 18.30 the screening will be open to the public. The documentary is the story of a journey to Istria in search of an ancient Istrian recipe. Francesca, a young woman from Turin, nephew of Istrian exiles, has lost her grandmother’s recipe book containing, among others, the recipe of “Il Castello di Croccante”, which is now impossible to find. So she starts a journey in search of the recipe, in an attempt to recompose the entire grandmother’s book; she travels across Italy until she finds herself in the marvellous land of Istria, discovering his painful and controversial history. Crossing physical and emotional borders, Francesca will come into contact with the tragedies of the exodus and the foibe, and with their victims. Saturday 10 February at 21.00 at the Cantiere Oberdan there will be the presentation of DMZ: Dissonance, technology and liberty, an international artistic residence created among Seoul, Rome, New York and Spoleto.
This particular international artistic Residence takes place simultaneously in New York and in Italy. The two places are tied together, allowing a group of Italian and Korean students to work together participating in a series of workshops and seminars on the use of media in performing and in the theatre as a tool to develop relations and social activism. The residence will end on 10 February with a performance open to the public at the Cantiere Oberdan in Piazza San Gabriele dell’Addolorata at 21.00.
The very event will be seen live in New York at the NY CultureHub at 15.00 (47, Great Jones Street, New York, NY).
DMZ: Dissonance, technology and liberty is the theme of the creative residence. DMZ is an acronym that stands for Demilitarized Zone, and it refers to the borders between North and South Korea; it is also known as 38th parallel, an area that was recently at the core of the attention by international media. In this collaboration, this expression is also symbolicvally used to define the digital dimension that separates and links at the same time the two spaces, a dimension that hosts the creative collaboration, the exchange of competences and the cultural interaction.
Technology is developing faster and faster, and enter our lives and each sector of society, opening a new interaction dimension that melts the physical, digital and biological ones together. But, can such a virtual space really succeed and find a true contact, or does it push us apart? Does it help us improve the quality of life? During this project, students, teachers and artists are invited to investigate on the matter of personal freedom and how this can be confined or expanded by the fast development of technology in the contemporary world.
