The Municipality of Spoleto, in collaboration with Consorzio Francesco’s Ways, join the event VIVI LA VIA, which will take place along the Via di Francesco / St. Francis Way on 25, 26 and 27 May.
The event aims at giving value to the culture of walking and pilgrimage, with due regard for those who choose to embark on the journey, in harmony with the environment and the territory, and thanks to the active involvement of associations and local communities who live along the way.
The historical link between St. Francis and Spoleto is well known: “Nihil jucundius vidi valle mea spoletana” is the phrase traditionally attributed to the Saint, who deeply loved the beauty of the mountains, watercourses and ancient forests that surround the city and that for Francis were one of the most joyful representations of creation and God.
There are many traces of the passage of Francis in Spoleto’s historical centre, which, on Saturday 26 May, will be the object of an urban trekking, aimed at telling how, even after almost eight centuries, the entire territory is still permeated by the figure of the “poor man” of Assisi.
The departure is scheduled from Piazza Duomo where, through the visit to the Cathedral of S. Maria Assunta and the Letter of St. Francis to Brother Leone, the Franciscan presence in Spoleto will be illustrated.
You will then move to Piazza Campello with a visit to the outside of the complex of San Simone.
The final part of the trek will include the tour of the fortress to talk about the first Franciscan settlement on the Colle Sant’Elia and present the sacredness of Monteluco at the beginning of Franciscanism.

Sunday, May 27, in Spoleto, you can participate in 3 different types of routes, to be faced on foot (in collaboration with the CAI Spoleto), by mountain bike (in collaboration with MTB Club) and horseback (in collaboration with Natura a Cavallo, Horse Centre Somma and Spoleto Country Club).
The event will be a special opportunity to discover the St. Francis Way and the places linked to the Saint in the stretch of the route on Spoleto’s territory, but will also offer musical and gastronomic events.
Participation is free of charge upon reservation.
Walking Itinerary
We will follow with possible variations the CAI ring path n. 1 that, starting from the Basilica of San Pietro and passing by the Church of San Giuliano, reaches Monteluco along the west side of the mountain. Return to Spoleto along the so-called “corta” (shortcut).

Mountain bike Itinerary
We will start from the Basilica of San Pietro and, after the Church of San Giuliano, we will reach the path for the Sasso Forato and we will reach Monteluco after passing through the hamlet of Le Aie. Return to Spoleto through Hotel del Matto, Valcieca and Giro dei Condotti.
Altitude difference: about 600 m.
Itinerary on horseback
From the SS Flaminia, South of Spoleto, we will take the Strada dei Patricani, CAI path n. 6, pass through the hamlet of I Camini and then reach Monteluco. Return to Spoleto along the “corta” (shortcut).

Spoleto in Fiore is an exhibition of fruit plants, garden plants, garden furniture, flowers, organic and typical products, organized by the Pro Loco di Spoleto “A. Busetti” with the patronage of the Municipality of Spoleto, the Umbria Region and Unpli Umbria.
The event will take place in the historical centre of the town from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 June 2018 and will involve Piazza Pianciani, Corso Mazzini, Largo Ferrer, Piazza della Libertà, Via Brignone and Piazza Fontana.

The experience starts at the Rocca Albornoz at 15.30 with Stories of Love and Weapons, a special guided visit at the Camera Pinta.
A workshop of Renaissance dance will follow at ore 16.00, led by dancer and musician Enrica Sabatini, to experience ancient coreographies narrated in important Renaissance treatises, a dive into the past to understand the present.

The 54th Race of the Vaporetti, a race at breakneck speed through upper Spoleto, will take place from June 15th to June 17th 2018.
Vaporetti are small carts on iron wheels, with a team of two, a pusher and a driver. The name comes from a steam-engine coach, the ‘vaporiera’, that from 1902 to 1909 used to serve the Spoleto-Norcia route, the first in Italy.
The race, which takes place along the streets that cross the historic city centre, has established itself as a successful local tradition, attracting every year an increasing number of spoletini and visitors.

As part of the sixty-first edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi, Thursday, June 28, 2018, from 9:30 am, the headquarters of the local Section of the State Archives (Largo Ermini) will host the opening of an exhibition, the presentation of a book and a conference on the theme: Spoleto 1959. The Second Festival of Two Worlds. The initiative takes place in collaboration with Umbria’s Order of Journalists and under the patronage of the Municipality of Spoleto, the Festival dei Due Mondi Foundation, the Polo Museale dell’Umbria, Rocca Albornoz – Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto and Amici di Spoleto association. Institutional greetings will be given by Luigi Rambotti, Director of the State Archives of Perugia, Umberto De Augustinis, Mayor of Spoleto and President of the Festival dei Due Mondi Foundation, and Giorgio Ferrara, Artistic Director of the Festival of Two Words. Roberto Conticelli, President of Umbria’s Order of Journalists, Paola Mercurelli Salari, Director of Rocca Albornoz-Museo del Ducato di Spoleto (Polo Museale dell’Umbria) and Rosaria Mencarelli, Collegio dei garanti Fondazione Polo del ‘900 (Turin) and Director of the Abruzzo ABAP Superintendence will also give a speech.
In continuity with the publication of the volume Spoleto 1958. Alle radici della storia, il primo Festival dei Due Mondi, published in 2017 on the occasion of the sixtieth edition of the Festival of Two Worlds and with the exhibition dedicated to the first year of the Festival, the Spoleto Section of the State Archives has continued the research on the origins of the event that has marked Spoleto’s history and Italian cultural life.
Through a conference, a book and an exhibition, extraordinary moments in the history of the city will be retraced in order to reread the origins of the event, understand today’s heritage and trace future scenarios.

For the first time, the ADD-art gallery presents artist and photographer Alessandra Baldoni’s ATLAS in full, with texts by Andrea Tomasini.
The work springs out from the meeting of the artist with Aby Warburg’s Atlas Mnemosyne, in which Warburg explores the surfacing of the images of ancient deities and symbols in modern European culture. Hence the idea of looking for the visual place where the world “rhymes”, a sort of chorus between things – animal faces, nature, statues – to find a sense, a cataloging by shape, colour, meaning. Sequences in search of an assonance, images that call each other while sharing the same secret. Alessandra Baldoni’s Atlas tells a story of ties and ropes, of meanings that hide and disclose. A rule, a math of beauty.
