On Wednesday, April 10 at 17.00 Ascanio Celestini will present his latest book Barzellette at the Library “G. Carducci” in Palazzo Mauri. Celestini has collected and reinvented jokes from all over the world. Stories that do not belong to anyone, but are available to everyone. They tell us what we have become, allow us to dig into the murky without becoming murky people. The event is included in the Spoleto di Primavera programme.
But Celestini will also be involved in another event: from 10 to 12 April the actor and writer will be the protagonist of three meetings inside Maiano prison with inmates-students of the art school IIS Sansi Leonardi Volta and participants of #Sine Nomine theater course. This last initiative was born thanks to the collaboration between the Turin Book Fair and CESP (Centro studi scuola pubblica – Rete nazionale delle scuole ristrette) on the occasion of “Adotta uno scrittore” (Adopt a writer), a national project that offers students the opportunity to confront themselves directly with authors to explore the fascinating universe of literary production.

The LXVII Week of Study on the Early Middle Ages, organized by CISAM, will be held from April 25th to May 1st 2019 at Albornoz Palace Hotel. This year’s theme will be Scientific knowledge in the early Middle Ages.
“The Week of Studies that CISAM Foundation is proposing for the year 2019, Scientific Culture in Early Middle Ages, intends to handle in an organic and methodologically updated manner if not all, at least many of the aspects that make up – like multifaceted plural pieces – the idea of science in early Middle Ages. This choice moves from a methodological proposal of which the program described below intends to represent an application. The very same concept of science, in fact, has not been (and cannot be) taken as an unvarying historiographical category throughout the centuries. Just to use the words of a recent contribution by Tullio Gregory, «in discussing of the scientific thought, it can be more prudent to talk of the manners in which hermeneutic systems have been built in history in order to give a sense to complexes of perceptions and knowledge, using conceptual tools typical of certain philosophical cultural experiences». The very same concept of nature, on the other hand, main subject of the scientific knowledge, is an intellectual construction that must be historicized having regard to a certain reference system. The various forms of knowledge, in fact, are built within religious, symbolic, philosophical and social contexts, which determine their subjects and methods, in a process of ambiguous relationships and fragile balances among different experiences, none of which is preliminarily superior than the others. From this the difficulty arises of precise distinctions, in the East like in the West, between different scientific practices if one wishes to link these to our concept of science.
Strongly anchored to this reference scenario, the program of the LXVII Weeks of studies is made up of a first Part investigating about cosmology of a strictly Christian type, based on a creationist reading of the Bible, making a clear distinction with the knowledge of the past on which the second Part of the Conference focuses. The different disciplines that can be recognized as science of the early Middle Ages (and the most important figures represented in it) are, then, investigated in a direct comparison between the results offered by the Latin West, by the Greek East and by the Arab World. This comparison is, finally, caught both through the theoretical tools that feed it (schools, translations, lexicon, books, conceptual symbols and figurative illustrations), and in the light of the technical applicative aspects that it was able to determine (in frameworks such as calculation, juridical exegesis, construction techniques and minting). Finally, a crucial question: which was in the deeply Christian early Middle Ages, the relationship between science and faith? The ultimate ambition of CISAM Foundation is that – thanks to the commitment of the scholars invited to deliver the different lessons – the Records of the Week may offer an updated momentum of consideration and redefinition, above all on the side of the many anachronisms and various truisms that are still characterizing the study of the scientific thought in early Middle Ages.”
